We all sometimes read ingredient list on soft drinks or snack bars and come across long, confusing words, like Maltodextrin. What is exactly this additive and is it bad for you?

Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide, essentially thought of as a carbohydrate, that is commonly used as a food additive. It is produced by the process of partial hydrolysis of starch. Maltodextrin is easily digestible by our body, absorbed as rapidly as glucose is and can be either moderately sweet or almost flavorless. In today’s food manufacturing environment, maltodextrin considered by many as among the better dextrin derivatives, is among the most popular.

Maltodextrin  is sometimes confused with maltose because they have similar names, however, it’s not maltose and  does not contain maltose. It is largely used by athletes, because it provides quickly the right amount of energy during the exercise.

Because it has a high glycerin index, maltodextrin can cause spikes in your blood sugar, so people with sugar problem should avoid items that have high level of this ingredient. You can always use some other sweeteners that won’t cause high sugar oscillations, like stevia, erythritol or polydextrose. People without problems can ingest food additives and maltodextrin in reasonable moderation, but we do not encourage you to eat lots of processed food and sweet drinks.
